Care of Climbing Roses

The care of climbing roses is not much different than gardening and caring for roses in general. The only exception relates to pruning climbing roses.

Taking care when planting climbing roses will dramatically effect how difficult or easy you’re care of climbing roses will be.

Let’s start at the beginning. You should always choose a healthy, disease free plant. Bare root roses or roses grown in containers are your best option. When growing climbing roses look for a well developed, healthy root system. Make sure that the stems do not have any white shoots. Climbing rose’s stems at this stage should be about the width of a pencil and there should be at least tow stems. These stems should be about 24 to 30 inches long.

Planting Climbing Roses

Planting climbing roses in the correct spot is vital in the care of climbing roses. First, you should dig a hole about twice the sixe of the root ball. This hold should be no nearer than 18 inches to the wall and below the level of any damp coursing that may exist. Shape the base of the hole to approximately 45 degrees running away fro the hole. Now put a nice base of humus rich soil in the base. Now gently place the rose in and back fill the hole. Gently firm in and give a good watering. Make sure to water well in the first year after planting,

Roses are deep rooted but they do need to be well watered in their first. Year. For many people growing roses, regardless of the rose types, this failure to adequately water as part of the care of roses is what causes the greatest problems.

Care of climbing roses – training

Put in place a series of horizontal wires fixed to the wall at about 6 inches apart. Tie your climbing roses along the first one or two wires in a fan effect. This ensures that the rose spreads out horizontally and this then sends more shoots upwards. You then do the same with these. Doing it this way not only ensures that your climbing rose is secure but also means that you will get blooms all the way up rather than just at the top.
