Rose Maintenance

ROSE BUSH CARE MAINTENANCE

Rose Bush care and maintenance generally follows the same guidelines for all the rose types.  There will be variations with different types of roses but the guidelines here are  always applicable.

Rose bush care and maintenance -Watering – All rose types are deep rooted.  They like to sink their feet well into the ground.  As a result of such deep rooting they can tolerate drought better than most plants.  The first spring after planting your rose is crucial, if there is a chance of the soil drying out, give it a good drink.  When you get through the first year you will only need to water if there is a chance of a drought.

Rose bush care and maintenance – Feeding – All plants that produce flowers need an adequate amount of nutrients.  All the different types of roses are no different.  In early April give your roses a good feed of blood, bone and fishmeal.  About 2 large handfuls per rose will do the trick.

Then in June, give your roses a feed of specially prepared rose fertilizer.  Sprinkle the fertilizer, which will contain magnesium and potash around the base of the different roses and gently work into the soil.

Rose bush care and maintenance – Mulching – Good mulching is highly beneficial to any rose.  Well rotted manure is the ideal choice but fit this is not realistic use a good garden compost or/and bark mulch.  Using mulch retains moisture, suppresses weeds and is of great benefit.

Rose bush care maintenance – Deadheading – As soon as a bloom is spent make sure to deadhead.  This not just keeps the rose tidy but by conserving its energy for new blooms the rose concentrates on producing fresh blooms.  With the Hybrid Tea Rose types, a light pruning will encourage a second flush of roses.

Care of roses and maintenance – Diseases and Pests - All the different types of roses have their own particular issues with certain diseases and pests.  This is no different than any other plant.  Regular treatment is highly effective.  The main problems for most rose types are
1.  Greenfly,   2.  Mildew, 3.  Blackspot.

There are plenty of treatments available and performing a regular treatment schedule starting in April will certainly make gardening and caring for roses a lot easier.

Rose bush care and maintenance – Weeds and Suckers – Mulching at the base of the rose is by far the most effective of treatments to deter weeds.  Hoeing is not as effective and there is always a chance of damaging the rose roots.   Sowing plants underneath your rose is another option but give it some thought as they can compete for nutrients.

Rose bush care and maintenance – Suckers – Rose sucklers are another issue to be aware of when gardening and caring for roses.  Sucklers are shoots that emerge from the rootstock.  They will be different in coloring and by the quantity of leaves present.   Gently clear away soil from around the rose until you can clearly see and get to where the suckler is emerging from.  Firmly and clearly pull the suckler down hard and away. Caring for rose bushes is not as complicated as some people make it out to be.
