Taking  care of roses in April

Growth will have started by now so it is important that you have all your pruning finished by now.  You can save yourself further work down the line by rubbing off with your thumb any new shoots you think are not needed. General gardening and caring for roses at this time of the years reaps huge benefits further on in the year.

Carefully apply a high grade rose fertilizer around the base and gently work it into the soil.  Try to keep it off new growth.

Tidy up bed and lawn edges.  If you are familiar with parts of the garden that are prone to bad bouts of black spot treat with your favored treatment.  It is better to get in early before damage is done.

Raise the temperature slightly in the greenhouse if you are growing roses in containers.  Maintain regular feeding and watering.  As usual with the care of roses be on the look for pests and diseases.

Taking care of Roses in May.

Rose bush maintenance care is critical in May.  The pace of growth has rapidly quickened.

Apply good heavy mulch.

Treat rose bushes with a systemic insecticide as the chances of greenfly damage are greatly increased.  Treatment for other problems can also be administered in May.  If a rose is looking healthy a liquid feed to the base will suffice.  If the rose is struggling a little a foliar feed (i.e. to the leaves) will help the rose a good deal quicker.

For the growing of roses in containers it is now time to move them out of the greenhouse.  Make sure they are not sitting on the earth but instead raised up a little.  Do not overwater. If you care for roses now you’ll reap the benefits throughout the year.
