Taking care of roses-Jan to March

Taking Care of Roses in January.

With the potential for damage by frost and water logging rose bush care maintenance at this time of the year is important. The following is a very simple yet very effective primer on how to care for roses, month by month.

Check your rose bushes to see if the frosh has loosened the soil at the base.  Gently firm up if it is loose.  Check rose bushes that are using supports and make sure that the ties are secure as well as the supports themselves.

If you are planning on growing roses in a new bed now is, if it’s not too wet, a good time to turn over the soil.  This will give the frost a chance to break the soil up a little.

Make sure that your greenhouse is at a suitable temperature for any roses you might be over-wintering.

If the soil is not too wet you can continue preparing new rose beds or sites.  If you are in a milder part of the world you can prune the more vigorous Floribunda Rose types from the end of this month.

If you are growing roses in containers in your greenhouse maintain a suitable temperature.

Also keep a close eye on the possible appearance of greenfly and caterpillars.  The sweet, tender new growth is very appealing.

Take care to have all your roses planted before March is out.  Now is the time to prune bush and standard rose types.  Don’t put prunings in compost, get rid of them entirely.

Check your roses growing in containers.  They might be starting to bud and feed would be greatly appreciated.  Raise the temperature of the greenhouse a couple of degrees to stay in line with nature.

Hoe your roses beds thoroughly, if this is still not working you might have to consider more extreme measures.

Everything you do now regarding gardening and caring for roses will benefit them greatly further into the year.  Properly taking  care of roses is about doing a little at the right time.
