Different types of shrub roses

There are many different types of roses within this grouping. In general these rose types are taller than either the floribunda or the Hybrid Tea Rose types.

Centifolia Roses
These types of roses are also known as Cabbage Roses and Provence Roses. With their heady scent they are probably the type of rose everyone thinks about when they imagine old fashioned roses. Unfortunately Centifolia roses require a lot of care. Their stems are soft and very floppy and care of roses such as this also requires regular spraying and feeding.

Different types of roses – Gallica Roses
Gallica roses are often known as French roses. The Gallica rose type is thought to be the oldest of all the garden roses. Within these types of roses the flower sixes will vary. Generally the color of these roses go from pink through to purple. There is one particular type of Gallica rose that is very popular as it is almost thorn less and does fine in poor soil. This particular type of rose is known as Rosa Mundi

Moss Roses
moss rose types are relatives of the Centifolia type of rose. It is thought to be about 300 years old. Very similar to the Centifolia, what makes this rose different is the ‘downey’ or ‘sticky hairs’ that are on the stalks and sepals. This moss like hair gave rose to its name. They have double blooms that are very sweetly scented and some are repeat flowering.

Different types of shrub roses – Polyantha
These types of roses rarely grow taller than 3 feet. They are a very hardy rose type that will often flower right through summer and autumn. These blooms appear in large clusters of small flowers.

Shrub rose types – Rosa Rugosa
Also referred to as Japanese rose as they originated in Japan. gardening and caring for roses of this type is easy. There are no problems with Rugosa roses. They are fragrant, highly disease resistant, do well in poor soils and are great if you are thinking of growing rose hedges. If you are thinking of easy rose bush care maintenance this is certainly one type of rose to consider.

Species types of Roses
This group is generally a grouping of different types of wild roses. They are often called by their Latin names or an English name. These are a very old type of rose that have one show of single blooms followed by hips.
