Growing roses for color.
Many people believe that you should only grow roses of one color. This is neither always practical nor desirable. The complete opposite of this where roses of many different colors are growing is not desirable either. There is a happy medium.
Grow your roses in groupings of 3-5 of each color. The color you choose is entirely up to you. It is after all your rose garden. People who are particularly good at color co-ordination can achieve wonderful results. Ultimately, growing roses is a matter of personal choice, so it’s up to you to decide what appeals to you.
If you are thinking of underplanting your roses there are disadvantages and advantages to consider.
Disadvantages of underplanting roses.
- Other plants rob the rose of nutrients and water.
- Mulching can be a problem
- Rose bush care maintenance can be made difficult by the reduction in the amount of space between the roses.

Advantages of underplanting roses.
If the appropriate plants are chosen the disadvantages mentioned above can be greatly lessened.
- Color while the roses are out of bloom hide the bare lower parts of growing roses.
- Choose plants that do not have to be lifted and are shallow rooted. Crocus bulbs and viola are a particularly good choice.
