Growing roses

- necessary conditions

Growing roses and gardening and caring for roses  is going to be impossible if the rose is planted in very poor soil or in a poor location. No matter what rose types you choose if this part of rose care is not done properly the rest will be a struggle. If your rose is not planted properly you are always going to be fighting a losing battle to get it to look its best. This applies tothe experienced grower as much as to  growing roses for beginners.

Growing Roses – location, location, location. Sun For quality blooms or quality roses you need a good sunny location for planting your roses. Roses do not tolerate heavy and continuous shade. Air all rose types need a certain amount of air circulation, some more so than others. The bottom line is that there must be room for air circulation. This especially true for bush standard rose types.

Growing Roses-Shelter

Shelter from biting winds is a big help with gardening and caring for roses. The trick is to provide shelter by growing reasonably near to a hedge or fence but not near enough so that the rose is shaded. Soil The soil needs to be reasonably free draining with lots of organic matter. Ideally it should be a little on the acidic side.

Soil with high lime content should be avoided as well as soil that has grown roses for an extended time 7 – 10 years. To be successful in the care of roses getting the soil right is essential. None of the different rose types will do well in poor soil. Growing roses in waterlogged locations definitely will not work.

Growing Roses – When to plant your roses To get off to a good start with rose bush care maintenance getting all these factors right first time round is vital. When planting your roses, make sure that the soil is not frozen or waterlogged.

The optimum time for planting roses is generally late October and November – If you live in an area of high rainfall or very cold weather it is generally best to wait until March or even April. The above applies to bare root rose plants, roses grown I containers could, strictly speaking, be planted any time. However, April and October are probably the optimal time.
