GROWING ROSES IN CONTAINERS

Growing roses in containers is a great option for those that want to try some different rose types in a different setting. Of course it is often the only way of growing roses for those that have limited space.

If you are considering growing roses in containers your first consideration should be the kind of container to use. There is a wide array of choices from plastic, stone, metal, timber, etc. My personal choice is timber or wooden containers.

More important than the material of your container is just how big it is. To get off to a good start with growing roses in containers it is essential to choose a suitable large container. You need to give them ample room for root growth.

Generally the following guidelines to container rose growing apply.

Miniature Rose Types – 10 inch deep container.

Patio Rose Types – 12 inches deep.

Floribunda and Hybrid Tea Type Roses – 16 inches deep container.

It is preferable to use enriched soil based compost but where weight is a real issue other compost types can be used.

Place your container on top of a few blocks and place some crocks or rubble in the base of the container. This is essential for proper drainage.

There are plenty of different types of roses to choose from but with growing roses in containers it is important to choose rose types that have good disease resistance. Opt for bush type roses rather than those described as being upright or tall.

Place your rose container in a sunny spot. Keep moist during dry weather, but do not overwater.

Feed your roses twice yearly with a quality rose fertilizer. Feed when the leaves start to appear and then again in late June early July.

If you do decide to take a chance on growing standards or rose trees in containers, good staking is essential.

. As you can see growing roses in containers offers a great variety of choices to a great variety of people. It is also a great way of growing roses for beginners.
