Knowing how to prune roses, especially with all the different types of roses, is one particular part of the care of roses that seems to put many people off growing roses. Yes, it very important but it is not a dark science.
Once you follow a few basic guidelines it is much the same as anything else to do with growing roses. It just takes a little know-how and a little planning.
It is vital that you have a good sharp secateurs or you will damage the stem. if the stem is damaged the chances of disease affecting your roses is greatly increased. The cuts should be made at about 45 degree angles and just above an outward facing bud. Always prune out dead wood and crossing stems. Try to aim for a goblet shape. This leaves plenty of room for air circulation which is important for reducing the chances of disease. of course it also encourages new,healthy growth. Always dispose of diseases or infected stems and leaves in the trash. Do not put them in the compost heap as it could lead to widespread infection.

How to prune Hybrid Tea Rose Types
If you planted these types of roses as bare roots you should then immediately prune them. It might seem a bit harsh but the following is essential for strong healthy growth-
Prune this rose type right back to about 4 inches and let the rose do its magic. Prune out old, gnarled wood and aim for the goblet shaped effect. Prune to just above an outward facing bud and remove stems growing across the centre of the rose. In no time you will have healthy, vigorous growth.
How to prune container rose types
The care of these roses is very similar. If they were planted in spring or early summer they are fit for pruning the following January to March. Again cut at an angle over an outward facing bud. Aim for the goblet shape. remove deadwood and diseased stems. Prune all remaining stems back to about knee height. It is a good idea to remove a few of the older stems every year as this keeps them young and fit.
How to prune Floribunda Rose Types
Prune these types in January to February to about knee height. If they have just been planted as bare root type prune them right back to about 6 inches. Other than that the same rules about shape,deadwood and disposal apply with these type of roses.
