How to prune roses

This is a follow on to our previous page on rose pruning and is a very important part of the care of roses. On this page we will look at how to prune the following rose types,  rambling, climbing, shrub, ground cover and miniature rose types.

How to prune rambling roses-How and When

Growing these types of roses does not involve as much work as the other types. Because of their nature with these rose types  well defined structure and shape is not the most important part of caring for these roses.

The best time to prune these is just after flowering. Prune out old and diseased stems. Cut a few of the older stems all the way back to ground level. This ensures new fresh growth every year and keeps the plant vigorous. You will have to train in the new growth as best you can. If you can train some stems horizontally it encourages blooms lower down.

With fresh growth from the previous year prune lateral shoots back to about 4 inches of the main stem. If you are caring for some of the really heavy flowering rose types such as Kiftsgate it is a good idea to remove a few crossing stems every year as when this type matures you won,t get to prune those branches out without body armour.

The problem with pruning these types of roses is that there are several different types. Strictly speaking each type has its own method of pruning.

However if you are careful and don’t get too extreme with your pruning it is possible to apply the same method of pruning to all the types.

Prune out any dead shoot tips in March, for any shoots that bore flowers the previous season cut them back to about 4 inches. If you really need to remove stems totally make sure that they are totally spent and even then only prune out one stem per year.

There is no real pruning involved with these types of roses unless you want to remove the odd very old stem. Other than that just prune out dead shoot tips in early spring.

Again these involve very, very little pruning. In March remove dead, weak or diseased stems and just generally tidy these types up.

Pruning Roses Easily

There is a different way of pruning roses that has been heavily tested in Britain since the 1990′s and has proven to be at least as good as the older methods of pruning roses.  This is a very easy and sucessful method for anyone to use. the results are at least as good but because it is so simple it is a great idea for growing roses for beginners.
