Keeping roses fresh can be achieved by using a few handy little tips. Of all the flowers you are ever likey to bring indoors surely fresh roses are the most glorious. I might be a little biased hee but I just don’t think there is anything to challenge the glory of freshly cut roses.

If you feel the same way you can follow these tips for keeping roses fresh. You’ll be glad you did! But before we start I came across this tip recently and it sounds as if it could be a good start to keeping your roses fresh for longer.

It recommends putting your roses in a fridge for 5 to 6 hours and it is thought that by doing this you can keep them fresh for up to 3 times longer.

I haven’t tried it myself so I don’t know but it seems to make sense. Anyway back to my old tried and tested way of keeping roses fresh longer.

These tips are based on cutting your own roses but if you are lucky enough to receive a bunch of roses perhaps placing them in the fridge is a good idea until you have everything ready.

1. Cut the roses early morning or late evening. Use only a very sharp secateurs, if you don’t you will badly damage the rose stem. make sure you have a container of cool to tepid water to keep your roses fresh as you move along your way.

2. Only cut stems that contain a buds that are only starting to open. This will help you have fresh roses for longer. When cutting, cut at a 45 degree angle just above a bud. rememeber, put the stems in the water container straight away.

3. Now when you get indoors cut again at 45 degrees. Cutting at this angle leaves more surface area for water absorption and goes a long way to keeing the roses fresh. If you can try to cut them under the water.

4. Make sure that you have removed any leaves that are likely to be underneath water.

5. There are preservatives to place in the water to keep it fresh. The water will go off quickly. I use an aspirin dissolved in the water and it never fails. Change the water daily.

6. Keep the freshly cut roses upright in water in a cool place overnight. This gives them a good drink before they are placed out for display.

7. If possible keep your disply of freshly cut roses away from heat sources and direct light. They’ll thank you for it.

If you follow the above tips to keep roses fresh longer you won’t be disappointed and you can enjoy the extended pleasure of having fresh roses indoors. The little bit of effort involved in the care of roses is always worth it.
