Rose Types Classification

There are many different types of classification for the different types of roses. This has often been a source of much confusion. Thankfully there is one classification system that is being increasingly used and that is the system used by the All American Rose Society (AARS). This system is now in use by the majority of rose societies worldwide. The fact that it is now widely used should help to clear up any confusion over growing roses and the care of roses in general.

The society uses three main groupings. Below is a simplified version and it serves the purpose well.

Different Rose Types

1. The Species Rose Type.

Species Roses, often referred to as “wild roses2 are the originator of all the different roses. Easily identified by their 5 petals and “bloom once” feature they are generally climbers or shrubs.  Several popular types of Species Roses are: Cherokee Roses, Dog Roses, Gallic Roses, French Roses, and Redleaf Roses.

2. Old Garden Rose Type.

Old Garden Roses is the title applied to  a major class of roses types recognized prior to 1867. Usualy white or pastel colored flowers they generally bloom in early summer and that is that until the following year, they come in a wide array of sizes and shapes. They can be highly scented and usually very easy to care for. They are a very popular type of rose, amongst the most popular are the following:

China, Tea, Moss, Damask, Bourbon, Hybrid Perpetual and Noisette

3. Modern Rose Type.

A rose identified after 1867 is considered to be a Modern Rose. A modern rose is a cross between a polyanthus and a hybrid tea rose and are extremely popular. Their blooms tend to be very vivid and will repeat bloom with a little care. The most well known and loved of this type are:

hybrid tea, floribunda, and grandiflora

Once a rose has been classified according to the three main types, a rose can then be further classified by the following characteristics ; color, scent, growth habit, ancestry, date of introduction, blooming characteristics and size.

It is very difficult for horticulturists to classify every rose type, in particular the hybrid roses which often seem like a grouping of their own. This way of classifying all the different rose types seems to be the most sensible and easily understood. It is easy to see why this classification system has been adopted by so many rose lovers the world over.
