Lots of people are making the move to more natural landscapes. This includes gardens which showcase plants that are practical or which produce food. Quite a few vegetable plants are very striking, and many edible plants have decorative varieties. It’s great to have your own vegetables – fuel costs are driving up the price of all food products, and produce is no exception.

Edible landscaping often features perennial vegetables, which come back yearly without the need for replanting. After they’re planted, they’ll go on providing beauty and food for as long as you tend them.

Generally, just some water and fertilizer is all they require, plus some trimming, weeding, and pest control. There are plenty of perennial vegetable plants which are great choices. Perennial vegetables will look as if they’ve died in the late fall, but in the springtime they’ll come back and undergo a new growth cycle.

Perhaps you are a little leery of this idea – after all, a vegetable garden requires a lot of care. Constant weeding, raking, hoeing, watering, fertilizing, and spraying are all associated with the conventional vegetable patch. However, edible landscapes require scarcely more work than traditional ones. It’s actually pretty easy. Regular landscaping can be replaced with many varieties of edible plants. Try a fruit tree instead of a regular tree. Perennial herbs can serve as ground cover or small bushes. Decorative vegetables can be used in place of flowers or landscaping borders.

Beautiful mixes of edible and non-edible plants are also a great option. Herbs in particular look wonderful planted among other, non-edible flowering plants. You can blend many varieties of plants together to create a distinctive and appealing landscape.

Sage and oregano are highly attractive plants, and make for a wonderful border. Curly parsley is striking in combination with a variety of other flowering plants. Why not plant some leaf lettuce in beds as accents. Plant a section of varying types and colors of lettuce, and then add a border of ornamental grass.

Another good choice is planting edible flowers. These are plants are not only attractive, they’re tasty. Sugar snap peas produce white, pink and purple flowers, plus they make really good peas. Chives have remarkable purple globe-shaped blooms. Fava beans produce red and white blossoms. Dill has attractive yellow flowers. Salvia and sage boast blue and purple flowers which are a welcome sight and nasturtiums are not only colorful but edible.

Requiring little maintenance, perennial herbs and vegetables are an ideal choice for any landscaping. Perennial broccoli, dandelions, sweet potatoes, rhubarb, sorrel, artichokes, chives, fennel, ginger, and asparagus are excellent examples.
